Half of the sales of online shops for automotive spare parts are allotted to workshops

(firmenpresse) - Workshops are a significant customer group for online shops by now. This is shown by the results from the re-examination of the online trade with automotive spare parts, conducted by VREI and the market research and consulting agency 2hm & Associates GmbH.

While in 2012 the online retailers generated only one third of their sales with business clients, this share increased to nearly 50 percent in 2015. For the future, the shop operators expect a further positive development in the B2B customers segment. The times when mostly private drivers and Do-it-Yourself customers purchased spare parts from online shops seem to be over.

Clear signals for this are the expansion of the direct business relationships between online shops and workshops, as well as the increasing professionalization of the shops. Meanwhile, the online portals have attuned to this demanding but lucrative buyer group by taking numerous measures. According to the study, currently approximately three quarters of the online shops offer quantity- and frequency-dependant discounts to their customers. This is a tool which is being used for customer retention (just as in the classic offline trade) – and which requires a professional customer management system.

A substantial reason for the increasing share of traders in the customer base is the significant price advantage of the online trade. In comparison to 2012, the increased competition led to an increase of the price difference of 21 percent compared to the offline trade. For the workshops, this online purchase of vehicle spare parts offered an opportunity to achieve a higher margin. According to the online traders, further substantial purchase reasons are a wider assortment range compared to regional parts suppliers and a simple and convenient ordering process.

In spite of the shift in the customer segments, the simple and often required spare parts still account for the biggest sales in the online channel. These include oils such as 5W-30, brake discs and brake linings, windshield wipers, and spark plugs. On the other hand, the online share of technically complex products that mostly are installed by workshops lies at below one percent. In the future, the vehicle spare parts requiting explanation will show lower growth rates than the simple spare parts.

It therefore is high time for the traditional retail and wholesale trade with automotive spare parts to think about future strategies. The submitted study proves the urgent need for a multi-channel trade strategy. This will be the only way to cope with the challenges of digitalization and survive.

The current study, including numerous details and exact numbers regarding the six largest European markets, online suppliers, and parts categories, is available from VREI e.V. for 1.450€.
