Neuhausen / Stuttgart-Ehningen - 06 Jun 2012: Die Balluff GmbH hat ihre traditionelle SAP-Software-Landschaft und SAN-Speicherinfrastruktur zu einer voll virtualisierten Speicherumgebung auf Basis von IBM Power Systems migriert. IBM konnte das Unternehmen in dreifacher Hinsicht für sich gewinnen: HP Server werden zu IBM Power Servern, Oracle zu DB2 und HP Data Protector zu Tivoli Storage Manager. Balluff profitiert mehrfach: Die Ausfallsicherheit seiner Systeme ist höher, das ERP-System mit 60 % schnellerer Batchverarbeitung, leistungsfähiger, und die Gesamtkosten 15% niedriger. Der administrative Aufwand in der gesamten SAP-Systemumgebung konnte damit ebenfalls deutlich reduziert werden.
Die Balluff GmbH hat in seiner bisherigen IT-Infrastruktur auf HP Server, HP Data Protector und Oracle gesetzt. Mit dem Ziel die Betriebsleistung seines ERP-Systems zu verbessern, hat sich das Unternehmen für den Austausch seiner IT und für ein umfassendes Paket von IBM Soft- und Hardware entschieden. IBM Power 750 Server mit 24 POWER7 Prozessorkernen und 384 GB Hauptspeicher haben die vorige HP-Serverlandschaft abgelöst. Balluff verfügt zudem mit IBM XIV über 79 TB High-End Speicherkapazität und mit der IBM DS3500 Plattenspeicherlösung über 30 TB zusätzliche Plattenkapazität für Backup-to-Disk. Das Datenbankmanagement-System von Oracle ist durch DB2 ersetzt worden. Die Migration verlief schnell und ohne wesentliche Vorkommnisse. DB2 fügt sich nahtlos in die neue Systemlandschaft ein.
Die neue Infrastruktur schafft hohe Nutzenvorteile: Kosteneinsparungen von bis zu 15 % werden durch geringeren Administrations- und Managementaufwand für die Datenbank und für System-Backups erreicht. Die Datenbank ist dank DB2-Compression nur noch halb so groß, wodurch jährlich Ausgaben im fünfstelligen Bereich eingespart werden. Die enge Zusammenarbeit zwischen der IBM und SAP hat eine hohe Kompatibilität der Systeme zur Folge, die den Testaufwand enorm senkt.
Auch das ERP-System ist nach der Umstellung leistungsfähiger: 60 % schnellere Batch-verarbeitung durch deutlich schnellere Prozessoren sowie eine um 15 % verbesserte SAP- Antwortzeit im Dialogbetrieb. Durch den Einsatz von IBM Tivoli Storage Manager in Verbindung mit DB2-Compression konnten die Backup-Zeiten um ca. 50 % verkürzt werden.

Balluff GmbH Optimizes Supply Chain With IBM Smarter Computing Specialist in sensor technology migrates hardware and software from Hewlett-Packard and Oracle to IBM for 60 percent faster processing and 15 percent cost reduction
Neuhausen / Stuttgart Ehningen, Germany ? 6 June 2012: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that Balluff GmbH has migrated its SAP software and storage environment to IBM hardware and software to help optimize its global supply chain.
Balluff GmbH, a leading manufacturer of sensor technology, uses SAP applications to complete the execution of core business processes such as sales and distribution, production planning, and materials management. With the new IBM system, Balluff achieved greater systems reliability and performance ? including 60 percent faster batch processing for the SAP ERP system and 15 percent lower total costs through reduced administration and management overhead for the database and system backup. Administrative expenses for the entire SAP system environment are also expected to be significantly reduced.
Balluff GmbH replaced its existing IT infrastructure of HP Integrity servers, HP StorageWorks Data Protector and Oracle Database with a comprehensive suite of IBM software and hardware. This includes:
IBM Power 750 system with 24 POWER7 processor cores and 384 GB main memory, replacing the previous HP server environment. Traditional SAN storage and a fully virtualized storage environment including more than 79 terabytes of IBM XIV Storage System capacity and high-end IBM System Storage DS3500 disk storage with over 30 terabytes of additional disk space for backup to disk. By using IBM Tivoli Storage Manager with IBM DB2 database software, storage compression backup time was reduced by about 50 percent, which is expected to save annual spending in a five-figure range. IBM DB2 database software replaces Oracle. The migration went quickly and without major incidents as DB2 integrated seamlessly into the new system environment. The close collaboration between IBM and SAP, and high compatibility of the systems resulted in dramatically lower testing efforts. In addition, Balluff has gained a 15 percent improvement in SAP response time within interactive mode.
